“Is it cool if I go for a walk?” –day three 1 am

Just say no! ‘No, it’s not fucking cool if you go for a walk.’

These were the words I should have said to my ex-travel accompanying person. No need for terms such as travel companion, travel buddy, travel partner, or anything of the sort because to convey anything positive of the travel accompanying person chosen to do this road trip with would be an untruth, a tall tale really, fit for fairytales or something lame like that!!

Context: Hour 75 of a spontaneous road trip that had no destination nor plan with an ill chosen “travel accompanying person”. Sounds great, right?! It gets better. So this followed what was a dismal 75 hours leading up to the infamous question, “Is it cool if I go for a walk?” Little did I know these previous 75 hours were a walk in the park in comparison to the next three and a half hours… when he decides it’s a good idea to leave a 22 year old girl in a dark, empty parking lot in a city 1,900 km from home. Brilliant idea, you giant asshole!

It seems there are some moments in life where you are left no option but to do something that scares you… This occasion was forced upon me because I chose an awful individual to travel with. Pretty sure the rules of traveling together include having one another’s back. Actually, I’m positive that’s a rule. Write that down and don’t forget it.

Reasons it was not cool for this travel accompanying person to go for a “walk” (whatever that means):
-there was zero indication given in the previous 75 hours that buddy would be able to walk even a block and be able to find his way back to the car
-buddy is a poor drinker, really can’t handle his alcohol
-and oh right… because that would leave me alone in the sketchy parking lot!

Lessons learned… although spontaneity is a wonderful and powerful thing, calculated spontaneity is so much more powerful (turns out safer too)! Always consider your options and always do heavy research into your travel accompanying person. References should be mandatory! *Believe me, I’m writing a book on it!!!!

I’m so happy I wasn’t afraid to tell buddy how I really felt about his behaviour and that I wasn’t afraid of doing the only thing I thought right in the situation- get away from this knob and fly home.

Hopefully this tale serves as one of warning; leaving anyone alone in the middle of the night is selfish and appalling; truly is ghastly behaviour that considers serious self reflection.

Now go face a fear; do something that scares you!

I haven’t forgot

Promise this doing stuff I’m scared of has continued and prospered… just seems harder to sit at the computer on a regular basis than I thought it would be. I will work on carving out a specific time to give updates on these fears.

Some quick updates- the vampire inspired photo shoot in the graveyard (day three) was awesome in a bloodcurdling way. I guess, as per usual, I didn’t really think it through on how ridiculous the notion of going into a graveyard at night would be. I mean it’s one thing to walk through a cemetery at night, another to set up shop, light candles, and jump all over tombstones to “get the shot.” Sorry Betty Davis!
Yesterday (day four) I finally put a pen to paper about the scaring experience I had while on my road trip and a fear I should have faced while there to likely avert the end of a friendship and buying a plane ticket home to YYZ from Halifax. Speaking to the fear I experienced is scary in itself. As soon as I can get long enough to type that up, I will share… until then I’m off to work, then to find something else I’m scared of (or maybe I’ll get lucky at work)!

Man up

Admittedly, I don’t often read horoscopes. Just not my bag. And now here I am about to post my horoscope for the day… look at me opening my horizons left, right, and center!! I don’t think it was an accident that I read the horoscopes in the Globe and Mail today…

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21):

You have allowed your fears to get the better of you and now you cannot bring yourself to make a decision about a money matter of some kind. Forget about how much (or how little) there is in your bank account. Just do what feels right.

Day one is fast approaching… where I will be for day one? Who knows?! Who cares! I’m off on an adventure and to face some fears.

Rules are dumb but have their place

Do-One-Thing-Every-Day-That-Scares-You

One week until the challenge commences. I guess I can check day one off because I’m scared to death about this shit idea I came up with for the following reasons: rats, being completely transparent, actually completing something I start, and above all perhaps finding something out about myself that would’ve been more comfortable left in the deep dark depths of a place I call denial.

Thought quite a bit about attaching rules or at the very least some stipulations to this 100 day event, but thought rules and stipulations are lame and will only put limitations on something that is supposed to be encouraging the exact opposite. So, in short, rules suck and have no place here.

I decided yesterday I am going on a road trip. Conveniently my running buddy said he would like to do the same. So we leave Sunday. Good way to start this challenge I think.

Destination: unknown. Length: undecided (will most likely depend on how my travel partner and I get along… or don’t). Purpose: to make bad decisions and meet some cool folk along the way. Oh, and do stuff that scares me every day as well.

We’ve compiled a bit of a list and some rules. I know I said I wasn’t going to make any rules for my 100 day challenge, but for a road trip, we thought it necessary to incorporate a few rules.

  1. no being a pussy
  2. no asking of directions or use of a GPS
  3. no phones
  4. no more than 6 hrs of sleep a night
  5. no “I’m too tired” bs
  6. no farting in the car

Suggestions welcome!

Good God I hope this Eleanor Roosevelt chick is onto something when she says to do one thing every day that scares you. Nonetheless I’m interested to see how it turns out…

What are you scared of??
